Mel Says: I'll Give You Something to wine about

By Mel Ronick

herman making wineAs you may know Stacks and Stacks is located in the San Francisco Bay Area about a half an hour from the Napa Valley and some of the finest wines available in the world. We take our wine seriously!

I guess if we were from Texas we could discuss gun racks, from New York City; storage of our stock certificates, from Colorado; ski racks. But today we’ll try to talk about wine storage without slurring our words.

There are thousands of wine racks; from milk crates to walled units to refrigerated wine coolers.

We like to evaluate the cost of a wine rack by figuring out how much it costs to store one bottle. So if you buy a 6 bottle rack that costs, $24.00, each bottle costs $4.00 to store. The way we evaluate “value” when we buy for our retail store or the internet site is that for large quantities, say over 2 cases (24 bottles), you shouldn’t be paying more than $1.00 to $2.00 per bottle.

Of course if you intend to display this rack or cabinet in your home you may need to spend a little more. The more decorative the wine rack and the fewer bottles it holds, you should be looking at a $3.00 to $5.00 per bottle range.

The cost of the bottle shouldn’t enter into this math game, so it shouldn’t matter if you’re buying Two-Buck Chuck, or vintage Pinot Noir.
