What’s for Dinner?

By Karen Henke

The other day I looked in the fridge and found a bunch of miscellaneous ingredients and was trying to decide how to morph them into dinner. I went to my computer and typed in my secret weapon: Allrecipes.com. After typing my ingredients into the search box I was given a bunch of possibilities. This site is made up of a community of cooks that submit recipes and photos. It’s also a forum for comments. Sometimes the comments are pivotal in deciding if it’s the right recipe for our family or if someone else’s additions or corrections sound like a good idea.

I did a Google search to find other options. I found My recipes.com. I was intrigued by this site because it features recipes from magazines like Cooking Light and Southern Living. I used to subscribe to Cooking Light, but let the subscription go because I wasn’t completing one issue before the next one arrived. I always enjoyed their recipes. So I was thrilled to find this resource.

I also found Cooking.com. The recipes are just one section of a site filled with cookware, bakeware, tableware and more. (There recipe section works the same way as All recipes.)

On those days when a child is sick, the weather is bad or you just don’t want to go to the grocery store, these sites are a lifesaver!

I love Allrecipes. At this very moment there's an Herbed Sirloin tip roast in the oven - the recipe came from Allrecipes. (My house smells amazing!)

I've always been a cookbook junkie, but honestly, a pretty cruddy cook.

I'd get in a rut and we'd have the same things over and over. Allrecipes (and similar sites) has vastly expanded the variety in our diet.

Whenever I try a new recipe I print it out for use. If it's a winner, I put it in a page protector and file it in a binder. This way we have a book of favorites that I can hand hubs when we wants "something" but doesn't know what he wants.

He loves the variety, I love the ease

I'll have to give it a whirl - we're definitely in that dinner rut.

I think the hardest part of cooking is deciding what to make! I love the idea of putting the recipes in a binder so that husband/family have possibilities to choose from.
