Get Motivated!

By Karen Henke

I live in Minnesota, where we nest inside our homes all winter long…often eating comfort food. As a result it’s easy to pick up a little winter weight. I knew that it was time to start thinking about getting back into shape, but I was having a hard time getting motivated. I started thinking about how I’m always telling my clients to declutter one step at a time. “Just start with a few minutes a day,” I tell them. “Once you start to see results, it will be much easier to stay motivated.”

I decided to take my own advice and apply it to exercise. I’ve been pulling exercise articles out of magazines for years. I pulled out the file and put them into plastic sleeves. I put the plastic sleeves into a 2 pocket folder that I can keep in the kitchen. So when I am browning meat or waiting for the pasta to boil, I do a few stretches, squats or lunges. I even keep hand weights under the sink. It’s funny because this small start has given me a kick start. Who knows - this could lead to daily walks and eating more vegetables!

How do you motivate yourself to do the hard stuff?

It works for me to tell myself that I'll "just do the sit ups and if I still feel unmotivated, I can stop after that." Of course, once I've done the sit ups, I might as well continue…

Louise's last blog post..Saturday night's alright … to get a little Ak-Chin in

Louise,

I have to agree. Starting is the hardest part!

My husband is an excellent motivator. I just have to make sure (in my motivated moments) to tell him not to give in to my whining. :)
