Space Treat: Go on Vacation.

By Erica Ecker

vacationAround this time of year I start to hear the same comment from almost everyone I talk with… that they are thinking of using their vacation time this summer to get all their piles of paper and bulging closets organized once and for all. Sound familiar?

Contrary to popular belief, you do not have to waste a week of your precious vacation organizing your stuff. Every single day I organize clients, just like you, who are drowning in their disorganization and overwhelmed by their papers. So believe me when I tell you that without using a week of their vacation, we successfully sail through their piles and closets a little (and a lot) every week and before they know it, we've actually brought calm and order to their lives and put an end to their disorganization.

If you're thinking of tackling your disorganization this summer, I strongly recommend you schedule a one or two hour appointment with yourself twice a week to do so. Seriously, if you want to leave disorganization in the dust, slow and steady wins the race every time.

Clients, friends and even strangers often share with me that they once used their vacation time to "stay home and get organized". Guess what happened? They took the week off but never once touched their papers or opened that closet door. The thought of working on it by themselves for an entire week only added to their already overwhelmed feelings. Can you relate?

So my professional advice to you is take a week off of work but go on a vacation. The disorganization can successfully be tackled by infusing it into your week a little bit at a time. You can go on your summer vacation AND tackle your disorganization.

Erica

I unfortunately learned this the hard way. I would find myself spending an entire weekend only moving my piles from one room to the next and never really getting anything done.
Especialy now with my toddler, "cleaning" is never a done chore around my house, but "organizing" my home helps making cleaning up a whole lot easier, and doesn't require a weekend, just a few hours a day, giving me extra time to play with my son.

At least you learned - good for you!!!

I hear what you are saying. And… since vacation away from home this year might not be feasible, I'd encourage people to tackle their projects for a few hours every day. Ideally in the first part of the day after they sleep in at least for a little while. When the alloted time is up, do something fun as a reward. Keep going this way until one room, or area, or the whole house gets done. Just choose a "reasonable" de-cluttering goal for the available vacation time. And while you are at it - maybe add a little beauty to the de-cluttered space. That might added incentive to keep it neat. Kelly
