Every year around this time, I start falling in love with fall. As the festivities of the action-packed summer come to a close, I move inward and one word describes everyday… cozy. What is cozy? To me, cozy happens when all the senses are in tune with something comforting. A warm blanket to snuggle up in, a scented candle that evokes the upcoming holidays, warm and hearty home cooked meals. The refreshing iced tea of summer becomes hot, steeping pots of herbal blends that soothe the senses. Playful afternoons in the sunshine turn into drizzly craft days, movie days, and days where any kind of indoor indulgence is acceptable. The sun sets a little earlier everyday to remind us that this is the time to nest.
Albert Camus said, “Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower”. With green leaves turning to bright red, orange and yellow, the change of seasons is as apparent in fall as it is in the spring. Cozy is to fall what energizing is to spring and summer. It defines the season. Which is why I tell people who get the “fall blues” to look at it as an opportunity rather than a dark time of the year. There is an ambiance in autumn that we do not get any other time of the year. Remember walking home from school on a blustery, cloudy October day and feeling a rush of joy as you realized the holidays were just around the corner?
That is my favorite day of the year; the day it first feels like fall. Because fall means cozy. Homemade apple pies, wooly socks, playing in leaf piles, stoking the fireplace on a rainy night, curling up with a book, watching the leaves fall one at a time… To quote Helen Hunt Jackson, “By all these lovely tokens September days are here, With summer's best of weather, And autumn's best of cheer”. With that, I wish you all the coziness that fall has to offer!
