Tips For "Cozifying" Your Home

Tavola Cherry Electric Fireplace by Holly & MartinFall may have officially started already, but that doesn’t mean it’s too late to prep your home for what’s to come: shorter days, cooler weather, and finding pleasure indoors. I have a word for this, and it is “cozify”. I just got started on cozifying my home, even though it still feels a little like summer. What I do is introduce cozy items to my surroundings like plush fabrics and pull out appliances like the slow cooker and electric tea kettle. To me there is nothing like a cup of hot tea, a comfy chair, a warm blanket and a good book on a rainy autumn day.

And nothing sets a cozy mood like a fireplace. For me, fireplaces have a calming and soothing effect that is perfectly conducive to a cozy day indoors. Plopping down on a couple of floor cushions next to the fire with a glass of red wine is enough to send me into a cozy overdose coma! I have lived in several homes and only once did it have a built in fireplace – they’re just not common anymore. So I bought an electric fireplace and what’s great about it is that it’s totally portable. When spring and summer roll around, I actually store it in the garage and replace it with a table that holds fresh flowers and summery décor. That way, when I set it up in October (like you would with holiday decorations) I have that much more appreciation for its “cozyfying” effect.

If buying a fireplace feels a little extreme for you or is out of your budget, sticking to the basics works just as well! Put out toss pillows and throw blankets in fall tones (rich yellows, oranges and reds), light candles with pumpkin and cinnamon scents, and look through your cookbooks for hearty fall-inspired recipes. Every little thing you do will add up to one comfy, “cozifyed” home!
