Conquer Mail in the New Year!

Mail SorterGet ready for the New Year with a plan to conquer mail clutter, once and for all! I know what you’re thinking: It’s only the beginning of December, why would I want to worry about NEXT year just yet? Well, in order to conquer those piles of mail, you want to make sure you’ve got the right tools in place ahead of time. That way, come January 2nd (that’s right, you get a mailbox reprieve on January 1st), you will be ready to go! I know that I talk a lot about mail and piles, but that is only because it is a real sore-spot with people when it comes to organizing. Many of us (including yours truly) find those piles of mail (junk or legit) almost exhausting, and at the very least, exasperating.

Here are the tools you will want to make sure you have on hand before the new year, that is if an assault on mail piles is on your list of resolutions:

  • Mail Sorter – I know, a no-brainer, right? But what type of mail sorter do you need? My rule of thumb is more slots or sorting places than the amount of people in your household. That means if you are a single dweller, two slots are fine. A couple? Go with a three or more slot sorter. A family? Be honest and go big. There is so much correspondence that goes on between kids and their schools and after-school activities, a three slot mail sorter is simply not going to cut it.
  • Shredder – You can get a mail shredder for under $30 that is just fine for family-use. If you run your own business or work from home, go with a commercial designed one like the DocuGem which cross-shreds for extra security and allows you to feed several sheets at a time.
  • Patience and Perseverance – You can conquer mail clutter, I promise! You just have to keep up on it. File documents immediately, pay bills as soon as you can, have a safe place for unfinished business, and dump the rest!
