Grad Life – Part Three: Eco Style
When searching for the right gift for your graduate, it’s important to keep in mind that this generation of students is very tuned into the needs of the environment. Thankfully, there are eco-friendly products available for nearly every area of the home, so you will have no problem finding what you, or your student, needs.
Environmentally friendly homewares usually fall into one of the following categories: Chemical free (cleaners), organic (linens), energy efficient (appliances), or renewable resources (everything else). Choosing a product from one of these categories shows that you care about your grad’s interests and commitment toward a better world.
Eco-Friendly Gift Categories:
Cleaners – Beyond the rows and rows of spray bottles you will find in the supermarket, you can take natural cleaning a step further with eco-conscious tools, including brushes and sponges made of renewable resources. The eclipse broom from Casabella is made of recycled plastic and aluminum!
Home Décor – This is one of my favorite gift categories, because it goes back to that nesting concept we were talking about in part two of this series. Some great ideas in this category? The Key West Bamboo Area Rug which starts at just $45. Another option are beautiful reversible bamboo duvet covers, luxurious bedding and a real treat for a new grad.
Furniture – With furniture, look for something that is, again, made of renewable resources, or something that is made of recycled wood. Reclaimed teakwood is often used as a material for rustic furniture and bamboo is always an eco friendly choice. This bamboo kitchen cart with shelving is my pick for this category, perfect for small kitchens and budget-friendly.
Appliances – This is an easy one, all you have to do is look for the energy star label. You can find almost every type of appliance with an energy efficient rating, from refrigerators to wine coolers and more - a generous gift for your student and for our planet earth.
