I'm remodeling my kitchen, and will be without a stove for a couple of months. This hot plate and a toaster oven are my main cooking (as opposed to microwave reheating) tools. I've used the hot plate for two weeks now, and I'd give it a full 5 stars if it didn't still have a slight "hot plastic" smell when in use. The butcher block top of the cart it's sitting on shows no signs of excessive heat; I was a bit concerned at first because of the meager clearance of this compact unit. You should ignore the "fast heatup" part of the product description. The die cast cooking surfaces take a while to get warm, yet afterward maintain the heat well; cooking is very even. That's a reasonable tradeoff for most real cooking, but simply boiling water for tea is unacceptably slow so I've augmented my remodeling "kitchen" with an electric kettle. While it took twice as long as on a regular stove, I managed to make spaghetti, with sauce from scratch, for five on this hot plate and got nothing but compliments.
