This new overhead hoist system will allow you to store file boxes, outdoor furniture, lawn mowers, big tools, snow throwers, holiday ornaments, tires, third row car seats and just about anything else you can imagine on the ceiling while keeping your feet firmly planted on the ground. This garage ceiling storage rack is designed to lift the included 4 x 4 ft. deck to the ceiling ( 8 ' max.) with up to 250 pounds on top of it. Comments about Racor, Inc. Heavy Lift Storage Hoist- Maximize Garage Storage:

We found the "hook" bolts holding the wire base to the heavy frame were carelessly bent during manufacture leaving about a third of them unusable - there wasn't enough thread for the nut to grab onto. We had to replace them with substitute from the hardware store. A simple quality control problem.

Comments about Racor, Inc. Heavy Lift Storage Hoist- Maximize Garage Storage:

I installed three total and each install was easier after the initial learning curve. However, the hook anchors/bolts that connect the platform grid to the bars (which connect to the wires) are awkward. Overtightening them forces the platform and the bars to not sit flush which throws the whole thing off. I figured it out. The other thing, the bolts seemed a little soft. Maybe I over torqued them stripping the head clean off but for something that is rated to hold 200+lbs I would have the thought the bolts would have been super hardened. Overall though, the system works great and has successfully lifted everything off my garage floor allowing ample clearance height and freeing up a parking spot.

Comments about Racor, Inc. Heavy Lift Storage Hoist- Maximize Garage Storage:

I bought this to hold the cap from my Ford Ranger. I modified it by putting two 2x4s across the front and rear, wide enough to hold the cap. Once done, I backed the truck up to the hoist, lifted the cap onto the 2x4s, raised the hoist and my cap storage problem was solved. When the time came to put the cap back on a simple reversal of the process made it easy. I should have bought this years ago.

      • Short Lag screws

      Best Uses

      • Garage

Comments about Racor, Inc. Heavy Lift Storage Hoist- Maximize Garage Storage:

The provided lag screws are way too short. Most new attached garages are required to have double layered 5/8" FRT sheetrock. This results in a 1 1/4" thick ceiling. Taking into account the thickness of the arms this means that the lag screws are going thru 1 1/2" before getting into the ceiling joists. As the lag screws are only 2" long, the bite into the joist is only 1/2". This is not long enough. I went out and purchased longer (3") lag screws. Also, the length of the drop is not 8'. It is only about 7' 3".

      Garage Storage Lag Screws

        • Length of Lag Screws

        Best Uses

Comments about Racor, Inc. Heavy Lift Storage Hoist- Maximize Garage Storage:

The length of the provided lag screws used to attach the arms to the ceiling are 2" long. Most new fire codes require two layers of 5/8" FRT sheet rock in the ceiling of attached garages. Taking the thickness of the arm into account that means the lag screws are only going into the ceiling joists about 1/2". I don't think this is enough 'bite' to provide the required strength to hold the 250 lbs. I bought several 2 1/2 long lag screws which provide a better bite inot the joists.

          Suggestion

          Q & A

          Questions about this item:
Shopper: Can you get longer cables with this lift. The ceiling is 11 feet high.? Thanks
MARK M: My ceiling is 10 foot, and I can lower the racks to well below waist height. The cable is standard cable, you could replace it easily with cable from a hardware store any length you need.
Cathleen S: Sorry I do not know if you can get longer cables since I did not need them.
STEVEN S: I have no idea. Mine came as a kit and there was no option for longer cables. It would be nice if it did because I have the same issue.
James E: My ceiling/garage rafters were 10 feet high and I had no problem with the cables extending the rack to about 3 1/2 feet above the floor.
David S: I don't know how far down (close to the floor) you need the lift to go down. My cables are plenty long to bring it down to waist level or lower. To answer your question, I don't know if you could get longer cables, but my guess is "yes"... at the big box do-it-yourself stores... Home Depot, etc.
Shopper: Could one store a 16ft ladder safely with this? Thanks
Marge F: I'm a novice so am wondering if the cords that lift and lower are only managed by the drill attachment or do the cords hang down within reach of my 5' grandma?
Lori G: You probably could but it might be awkward and you would have to make sure it was balanced perfectly
Virginia W: It should store easily. I would make sure it's centered and tie it down with a bungee cord. Also, make sure you have plenty of ceiling room once the lift is raised up. We really like our storage system.
David S: I'm sure you could. The "shelf" is about 4' x 4'. More than enough to hold and balance a 16' ladder. But I think you'd want to secure it with a bungee-type cord. The base is a lattice work so its easy to use bungees on these. I have two in my garage and I am REALLY glad I bought them. (Make sure the ladder would not compromise a garage door operation when up on the shelf.)
James E: If it was balanced and fastened to the frame you could easily lift it. Just keep in mind that you have about 6 feet of ladder hanging out each side I modified mine to hold a truck cap and it worked wonderfully.
Kathy B: It's very sturdy and well built. I would think so.
Thomas S: personally, I wouldn't store a 16 ft ladder on mine..... it's not wide enough. I believe there are pulley-type systems out there specifically for items like ladders.
Peter D: I replaced the platform with a 4' x 8' piece of plywood which works fine (for a slot car set). If it's not an extension ladder it will hang over the sides.
Shopper: How easy are these systems to install yourself?
Frank L: I did it by myself with just a drill, ladder and hand tools. Marking and measuring to ensure everything was even was the hardest part. It took about 4 hours.
Justin K: Working over your head is never easy, but if you have good studs and a sturdy ladder, it's pretty straight forward. I installed 2 (the first took longer as expected) in about half a day. After the first few screws go in, the rest follow. They've been up for a while and are sturdy. The only complaint I have is that the grid/wire is difficult to keep flat with weight distribution and constant up and down. But I am looking to purchase another soon.
          Comment(s) about this item:
Mims R: Need extra storage in wasted space but did not want to always have to use ladder to get items on off platform.
Adel J: It is just what I needed!
James E: I needed a way to easily take off and store my truck cap and an easy way to get it back on the truck. I modified the system a bit so the cap would fit on it and it worked like a charm.
Peter D: I wanted to be able to raise and lower a slot car set from the ceiling of my garage>
