It works by taking the excess moisture and converting it into a liquid through the calcium chloride crystals. The beauty of the Original Moisture Absorber is the spill proof lid. The lid prevents damage from spilling and keeps children and animals out of the collected liquid. For ultimate convenience, it is safe and easy to use. There is no handling of chemicals! Just snap off the lid, peel the foil cover off and snap the lid back on! When all the crystals have been converted to liquid, just discard the entire product. I had my doubts about this, but it works!
I had a small flood in the spare bedroom, and the carpet just would not dry. I used this, and it somehow pulled the moisture right out. The little bucket was full of water within days.

Based on the pictured results on the package, I can only assume this product failed. The crystals were pictured as turning into liquid in 7-10 weeks & my package just became a solid mass.
