I have 8 kids ranging from the age of 11 years to 4 months and I've been looking for a way to store all of our shoes. This item was fairly easy to set up and so far, is working out perfectly. My only disappointment is that the compartments are a little narrow, so you have to stack the shoes of the older kids like they were fitting into a shoe box which may deter them from using the compartments in the future. Also, any wider shoes like my all weather mocs, my boys high top sneakers and all of my husbands shoes either don't fit or are difficult to get in and out.
The only other improvement I would make to this item (besides making the compartments bigger) is to put the doors on hinges that would allow them to open flat against the sides of the cubby. That way you could keep the doors open most of the time, and close them when company comes.
Over all this shoe cubby is well constructed, easy to put together (I did it in less than an hour) and will hopefully help me control the shoe mess in our house.
