The Rechargeable Cheese Grater is wonderful. I have a lot of trouble with my arms and shoulders, and this allows me to easily grate as much cheese as I want without pain!

We bought a rechargeable cheese grater from a brick-and-mortar store; I believe we got the earlier model of this item. Ours lasted for at least five years before it gave up the ghost -- which is a pretty good value for something that cost us under $40. You can buy a Mouli for a bunch less, but this does offer some appealing advantages. The cordless/battery operation really is a convenience, even if you aren't grating a pound of cheese at a time. That's because the motor can turn the blades -- two rollers were included with mine, though it's not clear how many come with this one -- with more OOmph than can a 90-pound-weakling like myself. With hard cheeses, that can really make a difference. (Go ahead, kick sand in my face. I'll kick grated parmesan in yours.) I was concerned about taking up MORE counter space with yet another single-purpose item, but that turned out to be less of a problem than I envisioned. The gizmo can hang on a wall, and since you aren't tethered by a power cord to use the device, the hang-up spot doesn't have to be in the middle of the kitchen. On the other hand, cleaning the gizmo was a bit of a pain, and I often fought with the interchangeable wheels. The grater did an extremely good job on hard cheeses, such as parmesan, and a decent job on dense cheeses like emmenthaler. It was also good at chocolate -- surprisingly so. But it only made a gummy mess with softer cheeses (i.e. Monterrey Jack), and created applesauce rather than grating an apple to add to my breakfast muesli. So this won't be the only grater you have in your kitchen. It isn't perfect, but it's useful.
